In the Caribbean, Dutch Guiana, and Brazil, the enslaved death rate was so high and the birth rate so low that they could not sustain their population without importations from Africa. Rates of natural decrease ran as high as 5 percent a year. While the death rate of the US enslaved population was about the same as that of Jamaican enslaved persons, the birth rate was more than 80 percent higher in the United States.

Scholars provide various explanations for why African traders were willing to supply enslaved Africans to Europeans for the trans-Atlantic trade. By the early sixteenth century, slavery already played a major role in some western and central African societies, and contributed to maritime slave trade systems across the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Subsequently, some historians argue that Europeans in the Atlantic took advantage of a pre-existing slave trade system in Africa to obtain labor for expanding plantation economies in the Americas.

During this period, some enslaved women took part in the anti-slavery movement. For instance, in 1847, the New Bedford, Massachusetts, Anti-Slavery Society organized a camp in the woods of New Bedford for runaway slaves. The camp, known as the Alcotela camp, provided shelter, clothing and food for more than 400 fugitive slaves. In 1848, the Des Moines, Iowa, Anti-Slavery Society organized a camp for former slaves. Between 1848 and 1860, 60,000 former slaves arrived in Iowa. In 1851, the national Women's Anti-Slavery Society organized for the first time. Thousands of women joined anti-slavery societies in the northern and southern states.
