There was one moment, in the second half, that I found pulling me from the experience. The beloved poo-poo monster sticks a piano key up its noggin, creates a loud noise and then gets struck by a ton of pages from a book, knocking a bookcase over and introduces some very low-key humour. The surprises are mad, but all peculiarities are without impact and each is clear in its place. The narrative and any struggle isn't as dramatic as The Dark Knight, which for me is a plus. For a smaller budget production, it's as effective as it should be.
By the time their credits rolled was was starting to feel a bit cheap. Movies are the classics of cinema and they should be more like the classics, and The Dark Knight was a beautiful family film, a gorgeous movie with moments of weight and intensity.
While the direction and technical merits of this debut move are still considered solid, it could have been so much greater if they had recognized that the film was a kind of lost masterpiece of style and character, and set everything else around it accordingly.
