For the most part, the West Coast didnt get the respect it deserved for much of the 80s. Like many good things, Los Angeles begins with N.W.A., a punishing, eye-opening exploration of race, gender, and violence. A city best known as a place where young men rap about shooting niggas, throw bottles at police cars, and even rap about how great theysuck at sex, the Queens of the West first release was about the conditions that led to so much chaos in L.A. On Straight Outta Compton, the artists of N.W.A. give scenesters, beatboxers, deejays, and rappers from every race and experience a voice that was young, angry, but at the same time firm and unforgiving. N.W.A. was in many ways the record that turned hip-hop from a marginal art form into a cultural movement.
All five members of the greatest rap group of all time absolutely owned the Compton they came from. Straight Outta Compton, their first full album, is the most violent and political album ever recorded by a rap group, and its pretty much like that straight out the gate. On some songs, like Intruder (Come to the front and watch this muthafucka, they say, before a panicked Travis Barker beats to a frantic dirge), the group are riding the razors edge of violence and murder-suicide, full of venom and wit. On others, like When Doves Cry, where they sit in a bath of crocodile tears and creamsicle guitars, they find a completely different tone. What they did together was astonishing, and this album is as good as they get.
Even if it isnt my favorite N.W.A. album or even my favorite album released by the group, its still a titan of the genre. They perfected three things: blunt braggadocio, economical rap rhymes, and deftly-produced beats. Most of the time, those three things make the greatest rap records a snap to like, and Straight Outta Compton is no exception. 3d9ccd7d82
